Have you or your colleagues ever heard the following comments at work?

“All the cleaners seem to do is empty the bins”

“There is no attention to detail; there’s dust everywhere”

“The toilets are disgusting”

YOU’RE NOT ALONE.

Whenever I am requested to provide a quote for cleaning services because the manager is “sick and tired” of cleaners not doing the right thing, they usually make one of the above comments during our discussion.

Here are five reasons why your cleaning service is below par and what you can do about it:

1. They don’t spend the correct time

When you sign an industrial cleaning contract you should agree on a specific amount of time the cleaners will spend at the site. Too many cleaners cut corners and don’t spend the required time at your business.

Solution? Ask your security company for a report on the time spent onsite by the cleaner(s) for the past two weeks and do a budget versus actual report for the days the site is cleaned.

2. Improper training on how to correctly clean efficiently

It is often assumed that cleaning staff know how to clean – like it’s part of their DNA! Guess what? It’s not true. Staff must be trained to make sure they know how to achieve a clean, sanitised and disinfected workplace environment.

Ask your provider to show you how they train their cleaners.

Bonus tip: Check there is a red mop for toilets and a blue mop for other hard floors.

3. Poor equipment that cleans ineffectively

Commercial cleaning requires commercial equipment. If the cleaners are not using quality tools then their results will be poor. Check the cleaning cupboard and ensure that equipment is properly tagged and that vacuum cleaners are of commercial quality.

4. No systems. Check sheets must be completed each and every service as proof for the client

People must be accountable for their time or time can be wasted. Time = money. Your money. Check lists provide clients with proof of service and peace of mind that they are receiving the service they agreed to. If your current provider does not have a check sheet on site to complete after each service, ask them for one.

5. No regular auditing of their performance

If your cleaning company doesn’t call you regularly to ask if you are happy with the service, they are probably getting away with something! Every workplace now needs high attention to detail and regular auditing to ensure that viruses are kept away. Ensure there is some form of quality assurance in place.
