Are bacteria lurking in your office carpets?

Most offices schedule a periodical vacuum of their carpets which makes them appear clean and fresh. But often it is what we cannot see that has the greatest effect on our staff and client’s health.

Carpets in commercial spaces can harbour mould spores, allergens and sometimes bacteria and viruses.

Professional cleaners who use industrial standard equipment are your greatest ally when managing a healthy work environment.

If you choose not to maintain your office carpets to a high standard then, according to, you and your colleagues may be susceptible to Norovirus, Salmonella and Campylobacte, as these can collect in your carpets.

Here is a quick explanation of these viruses:

(aka Norwalk Virus) can cause the stomach flu and other digestive problems. It can survive in carpets for 4 – 6 weeks and can become airborne when someone walks on the carpet.

Not only is this a food-borne illness but it can be tracked through your workplace on the carpet from colleague’s shoes carrying the bacteria. One study showed that 15 out of 55 (27.2%) household vacuum bags with occupational exposure carried Salmonella enterica.

Often more widespread throughout winter, this virus is prevalent in damp carpets. It can cause an illness called campylobacteriosis, which is especially dangerous to people with compromised immune systems. Its symptoms include cramping and abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Bacteria, like mould, thrives in moist environments, which means that floors and carpets that have experienced flood damage are especially at risk for exposure.

Great office health and safety will always benefit your staff and client’s workplace experience. Ultimately this has a positive effect on the company’s bottom line. A superior commercial cleaner who consistently delivers high quality is a valuable asset to your business. It is important to have great communication with your commercial cleaner so that if a viral or bacterial outbreak occurs in your workplace you can organise for a specialised clean to prevent the further spread of illness.
