5 Reasons Why Your Retail Cleaner Is No Good – & What YOU Can Do About It!

Have you or your colleagues ever heard the following at work?

  • “All the cleaners seem to do is empty the bins”
  • “There is no attention to detail; there’s dust everywhere”
  • “The toilets are disgusting”

You’re not alone.

Whenever I am asked for a quote for retail cleaning services by a store manager, they usually make one of these three comments during the discussion.

Here are five reasons why your cleaning service is below par and what you can do about it.

  1. Cutting corners in cleaning retail stores

When you sign a retail cleaning contract you should agree to a specific amount of time the cleaners will spend cleaning your store.
Too many cleaners cut corners and don’t spend the required time in your shop or store.
Solution? Ask your security company for a report on the time spent by the cleaner(s) for the past two weeks and do a budget v actual report for the days the store is cleaned.

  2. Improper training on how to clean retail shops

It is often assumed that cleaning staff know how to clean – like it’s part of their DNA! Guess what? It’s not true. Retail cleaners must be trained and time spent with all of them to make sure they know how to achieve a clean, dust-free environment for your customers. Ask your provider to show you how they train their cleaners. Bonus tip. Check there is a red mop for toilets and a blue mop for other hard floors.

  3. Poor equipment that cleans ineffectively

Retail cleaning requires commercial equipment. If the cleaners are not using quality tools then their results will be poor. Check the cleaning cupboard and ensure that equipment is properly tagged, and vacuum cleaners are of commercial quality.

  4. No systems. Check sheets must be completed each and every service as proof for the client

People must be accountable for their time or it can be wasted. Time equals money. Your money. Checklists provide clients with proof of service and peace of mind that they are receiving the service to which they have agreed. If your current provider does not have a check sheet on the site, that is completed each service, ask them for one.

  5. No regular auditing

If your cleaning company doesn’t call you regularly to ask if you are happy with the service, they are probably getting away with something! Cleaning retail shops and shopping environments require high attention to detail and regular auditing. Ensure there is some form of quality assurance in place.
